      Homelessness and emergency accommodation 

      Everyone deserves a place to call home, but sadly, some veterans and their families are going without.

      Whether you're couch surfing, living in your car or sleeping rough, we can help you and your family access safe, sustainable housing.

      RSL Queensland's Veteran Homelessness Program provides a comprehensive case management approach to support you in accessing secure, longer-term rental accommodation. You can request a call back via the button below, and frequently asked questions are listed down the page.  

      Independent living and short-term accommodation 

      RSL Queensland provides a range of affordable accommodation services for veterans and their families. We can help you with independent living options in locations across the state, plus short-term accommodation in Brisbane. 

      Angus house

      Angus House

      Short-term accommodation in Brisbane

      If you need to visit Brisbane for specialist medical treatment, or take time out from a domestic situation, Angus House offers a home away from home. 

      Here, veterans and their families can enjoy short-term accommodation and all meals for just $20 a day. RSL Queensland subsidises the cost of this accommodation to ensure it’s affordable.  

      Located in Toowong, near the Brisbane CBD, Angus House is conveniently close to both the Wesley and Toowong Private Hospitals as well as specialist offices on Wickham Terrace.

      Ayr

      Ayr

      Independent living in North Queensland

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent living in North Queensland may be able to apply for long-term accommodation in the Burdekin Villas in Ayr. 

      Ayr is a rural community located 85km south of Townsville. 

      The villas each contain:

      • two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes 
      • one bathroom 
      • spacious living area 
      • modern kitchen 
      • air-conditioning and ceiling fans 
      • internal laundry 
      • garage with remote-controlled access 
      • fully fenced private garden with garden maintenance provided.

      Cairns

      Warhaven – Cairns

      Independent living in Far North Queensland

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent living in Far North Queensland may be able to apply for long-term accommodation at the award-winning Warhaven complex in Cairns. 

      Warhaven offers a choice of purpose-built studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments. Each apartment contains: 

      • an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area 
      • one bathroom 
      • reverse-cycle air-conditioning 
      • covered outdoor area. 

      Residents also have access to a number of communal areas, including: 

      • library 
      • community garden 
      • barbecue facilities 
      • craft room. 

      Only 3km from the centre of Cairns and right next door to the Botanic Gardens, Warhaven is within easy reach of shops, cafes and restaurants, doctors, public transport and other amenities.

      Emu Park

      Independent living in Central Queensland

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent housing in Central Queensland can apply for long-term accommodation at our Emu Park complex. 

      Emu Park is a small coastal town on the Capricorn Coast, located 21km from Yeppoon and 45km north-east of Rockhampton. 

      Each of the 16 units contains: 

      • one bedroom with built-in wardrobe 
      • one bathroom 
      • living area 
      • modern kitchen 
      • air-conditioning and ceiling fans 
      • internal laundry 
      • undercover carpark 
      • private courtyard with garden maintenance provided. 

      The complex also features a recreation area with barbecue facilities, encouraging a sense of community among residents.

      Independent living in Western Queensland

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent housing in Western Queensland may be able to apply for long-term accommodation in one of 10 villas in Gayndah. 

      Each villa contains: 

      • one or two bedrooms 
      • one bathroom 
      • modern kitchen 
      • living area 
      • air conditioning and ceiling fans 
      • internal laundry 
      • garage with remote-controlled access. 

      The villas are conveniently located between the Gayndah RSL Hall and the local bowls club, with the main shopping street just a short stroll away.

      Independent living in Far North Queensland

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent housing in Far North Queensland may be able to apply for long-term accommodation in Mareeba. 

      Mareeba is located in the Atherton Tablelands region, around 63km from Cairns.  

      Mareeba RSL Studios comprises eight studio units in a private and communal environment.  

      Each unit contains: 

      • open-plan living and bedroom area 
      • one bathroom 
      • kitchen 
      • air-conditioning and ceiling fan 
      • internal laundry 
      • undercover carport. 

      A vegetable garden encourages residents to connect as a community.

      Independent living in the Wide Bay area

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent housing in the Wide Bay area may be able to apply for long-term accommodation in Mount Perry, located just over an hour south-west of Bundaberg. 

      RSL Villas Mount Perry is a small complex of two villas, which would suit those who enjoy the peace and quiet of rural life. 

      The villas each contain: 

      • two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes 
      • one bathroom 
      • modern kitchen 
      • living area 
      • air-conditioning and ceiling fans 
      • internal laundry 
      • attached lock-up garage. 

      The villas also feature an undercover patio and established gardens for tenants to enjoy.

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent housing in North Queensland may be able to apply for long-term accommodation at RSL Proserpine Villas. 

      Each of the four villas contains: 

      • two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes

      • living area with air-conditioning 
      • lock-up garage 
      • undercover patio 
      • private garden. 

      RSL Proserpine Villas are conveniently located close to shopping facilities and Proserpine Hospital.

      Independent living in Central Queensland

      Veterans who need subsidised, independent housing in Central Queensland may be able to apply for long-term accommodation in Yeppoon. 

      With eight one-bedroom units, RSL Elouera Court provides a peaceful environment with a community of fellow veterans. 

      The units each contain: 

      • one bedroom 
      • one bathroom 
      • modern kitchen 
      • living area 
      • air-conditioning throughout 
      • internal laundry 
      • undercover carport 
      • private courtyard with garden maintenance provided.

      Frequently asked questions

       

      RSL Queensland’s Veteran Homelessness Program is open to ex-serving ADF members who have completed at least one day of continuous full-time service, their partners, and Allied service veterans (subject to additional criteria) who are also:  

      • experiencing urgent financial hardship and unable to meet basic living expenses  
      • experiencing or at imminent risk of homelessness  
      • residents of Queensland or (subject to additional criteria) the Northern Territory.

      The RSL Queensland Veteran Homelessness Program provides a comprehensive case management approach to support you in finding stable, sustainable accommodation. 

      Those eligible for the program (see above) may also qualify for emergency financial assistance, referrals to psychologists or addiction treatment facilities, and referrals to other support programs.

      RSL Queensland’s housing and accommodation services are available only for ex-serving Defence members, their partners and dependants. 

      There’s a range of other organisations and services that may be able to assist you, including:

      If you have served in the ADF and can live independently, you are eligible to apply for one of our independent living options.  

      Housing is allocated on a needs basis, with consideration given to financial circumstances.  

      Our long-term veteran housing is subsidised, with consideration given to your specific situation.  

      You will be required to pay an agreed amount of rent and sign a Rental Tenancy Authority lease agreement.
